FAQ for Parents
Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few of the more commonly asked questions we have encountered. Hopefully your questions will be answered here.
If you a question that is not here or if you require more in-depth information please feel free to contact us or stop by our school.
Do you have to sign a contract?
A. No. Though we are a business, our focus is on teaching Kenpo Karate not selling you into a large contract. All of our programs are month to month and pay as you go, there are no start up fees or any other hidden fees. Your 1st week is free and your first month comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. We also don’t play the upgrade game like many schools that get you in with cheep intro programs then haras you into long contracts or “upgrade” programs. These programs have names like the master program, black club, leadership program, or what ever name they put on worthless “extra” programs designed to get more money out of their students.
What is a typical class like?
A. The general structure is usually kept consistent because students do better with a structured routine, but the material and lessons change from class to class to keep the kids interested. We keep the class moving and fun to keep the students’ attention. Below is a breakdown of how a typical class is structured.
A. Class opens
1. The typical class starts with a short warm-up (mostly in the form of games or fun drills) and stretching routine.
- Basics such as punching, kicking, striking, blocking, foot maneuvers, shadow boxing, and or bag work.
- Level specific training
1. Forms, sets, drills, and concepts for whatever level your child is working on.
2. Self-defense techniques for whatever level you are working on.
- Sparring and Grappling
1. Sparring is great fun for the kids. It is safe and helps build confidence when taught in a controlled and nurturing way. Safety gear is required but can be borrowed or purchased through our pro shop.
2. Submission grappling is not only a useful skill necessary for self-defense but a fun activity for children to learn.
Will classes interfere with school work?
A. We offer a lot of different class times to work with your busy schedule. At CCKK, your child will be encouraged to excel in all aspects of their life and rewarded for getting good grades. Kenpo Karate is a thinking art that is built on principles and theories. The student is required to learn and understand the principles of Kenpo. The art of Kenpo promotes logical and independent thinking skills. The confidence your child will gain will go a long way to help in the classroom and resist peer pressure outside of it.
What if my child gets bored?
We change drills and routines up frequently to keep training fresh and exciting. Your child will be guided, encouraged, and rewarded with positive reinforcement. In addition to the belt system, we will also reward hard work, good grades, and respectful attitude with our star system — small stars of different colors representing various achievements worn on the lapel of the uniform (see chart below). You will see your child progress and transform before your eyes, all the while improving their cardio, strength, and overall health with our self-paced program.
Star System
Blue star — Winning attitude, hard work, and helpful to other students
Gold star – A & B grades
Platinum star – Straight A’s
Red Star – Respectful attitude, responsibility and response – ability (student must have OK from parent and be able to respond to instructor’s attack.)
Do I have to purchase training gear?
A. No. All the gear needed is supplied. You may want to purchase sparring gear at some point. We can help you find the correct gear at that time but we don’t require you purchase it from our pro-shop.
When are the kids’ classes?
Where are You located?
A. At the Airport Business Park
57 Aileron Ct
Suite 13
Westminster, MD 21158
How much does it cost?
A. Your 1st lesson is free. No strings attached. This is a great way to find out about our studio, instructors, system and our teaching method and see if your child likes it. This can be arranged to fit your schedule. This private lesson will prepare your child with basic knowledge that not only will get them ready to go into the beginner’s class but could protect them on the street.
For probably less than your monthly cable or cell phone bill, you or your child could be training with us, building confidence, and learning real world self-defense skills. You can select to train 1 day or 2 days a week or choose our best value the unlimited program. The only limitation is the class size so you or your child can enjoy the personal attention of all our internationally certified instructors.
We are one of the only studios to give our rates up front without requiring that you listen to a sales pitch or take an intro lesson before prices are disclosed. Additionally, you will not be charged start up, office, or insurance fees as in many schools. We also don’t employ the “Black Belt Club” or “Master Club” or other fancy sounding gimmicks that some schools do to get more money out of your pocket for very little if any value to the student.
- 1 st Lesson (private ½ hour lesson with internationally certified instructor) – FREE
- 2nd Lesson Group Class – FREE
Family discount: 20% off 2nd family member, 50% off all others.
Defenders discount: 20% off for Police Officers, Fire Fighters, or Active Duty Military and family members.
How do we get started?
A. Getting started is easy. First, all potential students get a free private lesson with our Chief Instructor to introduce your child to Kenpo Karate and get them ready for group class. Once you’re ready for group class, your child will be in class with beginners like themselves. Again, classes are kept small so you get plenty of attention and help. There will be plenty of instructors to help your child succeed.
You will never get the high pressure sales tricks or watered down foo-foo martial arts here. At CCKK our focus is on the student.
